You will see those orange symbols on a lot of webpages to the right of the address bar, they are also often located in the body of the webpage.
If you already have googlemail for you emails then you will already have a feed reader, so on clicking the orange symbol it will immediately take you to google reader. If you don’t know whether you already have a feed reader simply click on the orange symbol to see what happens, if nothing much happens then you haven’t got one. Yahoo also has a feed reader but I find it to be useless.
But what is the point of subscribing, why not just bookmark/favourite? The problem with bookmarking is that it doesn’t inform you when new content is available on a site. So if you have a hundred bookmarks you would have to visit each one to see if there is new content. With a feed reader new content shows up in bold.
There are a number of feed readers, google reader is probably the most popular, here is a short video showing how it works;
